Winter Solstice Labyrinth at Compton Beach, Saturday, December 16 2007

Here are some pictures of the tidal labyrinth we created with flour, found objects and candles in the dark sand at Compton. What a marvellous time, and well done to everyone who braved the winter weather and came out.

A little report by Nick...

Winter Solstice Labyrinth at Compton, by Nick

For this year's winter solstice my mum did something special, she organised and made a labyrinth to indicate the passing from old to new and the days getting longer. Winter solstice is about the new beginning for the world, the days starting to get longer and nights warmer. It's is the coming of spring and a wonderful time of joy and togetherness of the community. In old times this was the time to sit inside and brave the harsh winters and share with your family and friends.

The labyrinth was phenomenal it was quite big and at night we lit candles to light the path, you went in through the entrance walked round to the centre stood on a rock and there you could make a wish and see the fantastic view of the raging sea from there you carried on and exited once again from where you began, having made a good experience for the mind and the soul.

We lit a bonfire and had a picnic on the beach. How  magical that the weather was so calm and mild after days and days of rain and storms! To top it all off a dead dolphin had decided to join us on the beach, it lay there quite peacefully, almost as if it wanted to be part of what we were doing and reminding us of the members of our extended family who live in the sea.

When I arrived there the next morning half of our labyrinth had been washed away, and the rest of it would have disappeared over the following few days as the moon waned and created stronger tides. For the next summer solstice (June 2007), we'd like to create a walkable fire labyrinth. We will need lots of people, so do come and join in and create some magic! - Eva

Photos to come when i can work out how to do it!
