Toyota
Technology Challenge – Home educated children achieve 2nd
and 4th
place out of 60 schools.
Two
teams of young people representing the Isle of Wight Learning Zone, a
home
education support group, travelled to Bristol recently to take part in
the
regional finals of a technology challenge being run by Toyota and Rapid.
The teams
had to design and build a model car
that either was powered by solar energy, or was programmed to negotiate
an
obstacle course.
Both teams
impressed the judges with the
confidence and style of their presentations, their team identity and,
of
course, by their cars. The Learning
Zone’s programmable vehicle was the only vehicle entered at Regional
level to
complete the obstacle course twice within a ten minute time frame. It
was
enough to bring them to 2 ½ points away from first position and
a place in the
national final.
The ten
young people involved range in age
from 12 – 16. They have been meeting on a weekly basis since December
to work
on their projects. Team leader Rebekah Gibson (12) had this to say
“It was a
great experience, we learned so
much and we definitely want to do it again”
